Last night we had a significant storm pass through the area resulting in the ignition of several lightning caused wildfires. The Lake Country Fire Department (LCFD) responded to numerous reports of wildfires on the very north end of Carr's Landing and a report of a tree across a power line on Carr's Landing Road. The LCFD jointly responded with Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) and the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) to suppress these wildfires. It was due to the quick action of the multiple crews which prevented these fires from spreading. All three agencies plan to patrol the area overnight and action any new wildfires.

Please be vigilant, when residents report smoke and wildfire it helps our crews respond quickly and contain fires before they spread. We’re grateful to those who called in reports of lightning strikes as this allowed crews to arrive quickly and stop the fires from spreading. Please continue to keep a sharp eye on your surroundings as conditions remain extremely dry. It’s better to have multiple calls than no calls at all. We need to keep watch on our environment and our family, friends and neighbours. To report a wildfire, call 1-800-663-5555 (toll-free), dial *5555 on a cellphone or submit a report directly through the BC Wildfire Service mobile app.

During this extremely dry time we all need to be prepared for wildfire. These wildfires border the North Okanagan Regional District but wildfires in Lake Country’s boundaries will be actioned through the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO). The most up to date and verified information will be distributed by the Central Okanagan Emergency Operations (cordemergency.ca) and I encourage you to sign up to receive these alerts.

The District of Lake Country will provide further information as it becomes available. We are committed to providing our residents with information as we receive it. Please consider subscribing to District news to receive all of our news.

Thanks for your vigilance and keeping our community safe.

With gratitude,

Mayor Ireland
