The Regional District of Central Okanagan supports encourages good habits for dog owners, to support the health and safety of residents and pets. 

All dogs in the Central Okanagan must be licensed. The Regional District enforces a zero tolerance policy ($300 fine) on all unlicensed dogs. Dog licences may be purchased on the Regional District website or at Lake Country Municipal Hall.

For pick-up of a dead animal on Lake Country roads or public property, please call 250-766-6677 during office hours (M-F, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm) or 250-317-9780 after hours.

Wildlife

All bears that are aggressive in nature, or sightings in urban areas, should be reported to the Conservation Officer Service (1-877-952-7277). These reports can be viewed on WildSafeBC's Wildlife Alert Reporting Program.

Backyard Chickens

As part of the District of Lake Country’s overall efforts to promote food security and small lot agricultural activities in our community, the The District of Lake Country allows residents to keep up to five hens (no roosters) on urban residential properties subject to the following limitations: 

Backyard chickens must be registered each year (free registration process) through the Province of BC and the District of Lake Country.

Required zoning:

  • RR3 – Rural Residential 3, or
  • RU1 – Small-Scale Multiple Housing,
  • Minimum lot size: 500m2 (~1/8th acre), and
  • Maximum number of residential dwelling units: two
