The District of Lake Country is a rich and diverse community where the arts, culture and heritage are essential parts of everyday life. The Lake Country Art Gallery plays an important part in Lake Country by building and supporting a local art audience and encouraging cultural citizenship. The gallery offers many workshops and other programs that serve various people within our community, including youth, seniors, and special needs groups.
What is the Public Art Advisory Commission?
In general, the Public Art Advisory Commission is in place to advise Council on issues pertaining to art, culture and heritage. The Commission spearheads specific projects that promote art, culture and heritage. They also co-ordinate the display of art works in the Municipal Hall and other public places in cooperation with the District.
How is the Public Art Advisory Commission Funded?
The Public Art Advisory Commission receives annual funding from the District of Lake Country in the amount of $2.00 per resident, which amounts to approximately $30,000 per year. Throughout the year the Public Art Advisory Commission applies for and receives grants, sponsorships and donations (both in-kind and monetary) from external sources, which benefits the entire community.
Community Pride:
There are many public art projects throughout Lake Country that the Public Art Advisory Commission has spearheaded, some if these include:
- Indigenous Sculptures on Pelmewash;
- Memorial Hall Mural;
- Bird House City on the corner of Berry Rd and Highway 97; and
- Sculptures throughout Lake Country parks.
The Lake Country Public Art Advisory Commission will be working with the Lake Country Garden Club to renew the existing mural on the retaining wall at the corner of Davidson Road and Bond Road. This project is planned for the spring of 2024.
