Winter solstice is a seasonal change that Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island (North America) celebrate by sharing historical wisdom through culturally connected songs, stories, and diverse dance styles.

The December 21st “Five Golden Hoops” event at Creekside Theatre is a showcase of talented Indigenous artists living in the Okanagan Valley. Kakio Productions’ World Champion Hoop Dancer, Dallas Arcand, along with Krystal Withakay (Syilx Nation) of Spaxwawlm Indigenous Initiatives are excited to bring people together during the holiday season, to share music, laughter, dance, and Indigenous culture.

“Our mission is to shine light towards Indigenous Solstice Celebration. We are very fortunate to share in public spaces creating meaningful and distinct visibility for Indigenous artists within the Okanagan Valley,” said Krystal Withakay (spaxwawlm), syilx Artist & Knowledge Keeper. “Dallas and I understand there is always more work to be done, which is why it is so important for us to do our part as Indigenous artists. We want to generate more public opportunities for people to learn about us and other Indigenous artists.”

The “Five Golden Hoops” special performance event is a rare opportunity for public audiences to witness and experience the contemporary talents of Dallas Arcand and Krystal Withakay combined with diverse special guest performances.

“We are thrilled to be able to host this exciting and enlightening performance in Lake Country,” said Ryan Donn, District of Lake Country Cultural Development Coordinator and Creekside Theatre Manager. “Creekside Theatre audiences love the wide diversity of shows we are able to bring into our intimate 250 seat venue, with free parking, beverage and snack sales, and a chance to connect with performers personally.”

“The showcase title “Five Golden Hoops”, is inspired by all aspects and elements of life, symbolizing how earth, air, fire, water and spirit are all interconnected. “Five Golden Hoops” can also be seen as a rendition of the popular Christmas carol lyric “Five Golden Rings”,” said Dallas Arcand. “We invite people of all ages and from all walks of life to join us for a remarkable and transformative evening celebrating Winter Solstice 2024.”
