I was walking the dogs along the beach today and reflecting on how caring and resilient our community is. I want to thank you for being vigilant this summer as we experienced high temperatures and lightening strikes. Many immediately called in reports of smoke or any suspicious activity that could have evolved into a wildfire, like what we experienced last year. Thank you to those who took measures to FireSmart your homes – making our neighbourhoods safe places to live. And lastly, thank you to those who took the time to check on your neighbours to ensure their safety and wellbeing as we experienced hot temperatures. Your extra effort of caring and showing compassion is what makes our community a special place to live.

I have one ask of everyone in the community this fall - and that’s to make it a priority to support the Lake Country economy. Shop local!

Our farmers have experienced tremendous setbacks from all directions. The warm weather in the area last winter followed by the cold snap in January, compounded by the spring frost was disastrous to the soft fruit crops. BC Tree Fruits closed the doors to many of our farmers - people that relied on the coop to bring their crops to market and make a living. Our farmers need our support more than ever.

Tourism is down substantially throughout the Okanagan including Lake Country. Businesses and services that rely on the summer rush are feeling the impacts. We want these businesses to stay in the community and be successful – but they can’t do that unless we all make an effort to support local.

Farm Gate Trail is a great way to find local farmers that sell what they grow on their property. Visit one of the many local farms, they have great produce and some of them have all sorts of fantastic food items. I had a great local fruit homemade pop tart recently but there are many other offerings, baked goods’ jams, pies and numerous other treats. Maybe tonight or this weekend take a break from cooking and enjoy one of the delicious restaurants. You could even order take out, grab a bottle of wine from one of the local wineries on the Scenic Sip trail and enjoy a beautiful fall evening. Lake Country has so much to offer – take advantage of it!

Enjoy the upcoming Labour Day long weekend. Stay safe, continue to care for one another and I’ll say it again - Shop Local!

With gratitude,

Mayor Blair Ireland
